Obviously mosquitoes are annoying. Their presence and those itchy bumps they leave behind can ruin any summer evening outside. That's not the only threat they pose though. Unfortunately, mosquitoes can also carry diseases that they can transmit when they bite you.

According to the CDC, mosquitoes have long carried a variety of diseases that you need to take protective measures against. You may have heard of the West Nile virus. A bite from an infected mosquito is the most common method of transmission of this virus, which can result in symptoms ranging from fevers to serious neurological issues. The Zika virus is also primarily spread by mosquitoes. There's no vaccine for this disease, which can cause birth defects and pose additional risks for pregnant women.

Mosquitoes can also carry many more diseases, from malaria to certain types of encephalitis. Now, what disease is being carried by mosquitoes can vary by region, but the truth is clear. These pests can do more than make you itchy, which means that you do not want them in your yard or near your home for any reason.

Mosquitoes are sturdy and adaptable pests that can thrive in a number of environments, but you can take some steps to prevent infestations. Your yard can be a breeding ground for them, so keep your grass neat and trim. Get rid of any clutter in your yard too. Old playground equipment, tires, and broken things that you swore you would fix one day could all make welcoming homes for mosquitoes and their young.

Finally, do your best to eliminate standing water. Mosquitoes like to lay their eggs in pools of water. Just a few days after they lay their eggs, you could have an infestation on your hands. If you have water that can't be drained, like a pool or a pond for fish, keep that water properly treated to keep mosquitoes and their eggs from thriving.
